Elliot Dougherty,29, and Matthew Eledge, 32, is a married gay couple from Omaha, Nebraska. Few years ago, the couple went on a backpacking trip to Eastern Europe and that’s where their thoughts of becoming parents have appeared. After months of discussions, hesitating and analyzing pros and cons, two men were definite in their decision of becoming first-time dads. However, a lot of things had to be done before they could enter their surrogacy journey.
First and foremost, English teacher (Matthew) and a hairdresser (Elliot) did not have enough money to afford the IVF. So, they started saving up. When finally two men came very close to starting the process, they had been overwhelmed by the news that Matthew’s mother, who is 61 year old, has the desire to become their gestational carrier. At first, Dougherty and Eledge thought it was a joke, because a postmenopausal woman couldn’t possibly carry and give birth to a baby, but their doctor proved them wrong. After a series of thorough medical examination, it turned out that Cecile Eledge is a perfect surrogate for the couple. The thing is that the woman has adopted a healthy lifestyle many years ago and her health condition is now better than many people have in their younger age. The second pleasant news was that Elliot’s sister, 25-year-old Lea Yribe, agreed to donate egg for the couple.
It could not have been any better, but in addition to that Cecilia got pregnant after her very first embryo transfer. Couple’s doctor Carolyn Maud Doherty warned Matthew and Elliot about the risks caused by the surrogate’s not young age and pointed out that there is a relatively high number of successful similar cases. After a full period of gestation, 61-year-old Cecile Eledge gave birth to her granddaughter Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge. Clocking in at 5 pounds, 13 ounces, Uma is a sweet and healthy baby girl.
