The latest research, conducted by Tel Aviv-Sourasky Medical Center in Israel, has shown that apparently, transgender men maintain functioning ovaries even whilst undergoing gender affirmation treatment and taking testosterone injections. This news appears to be very inspiring for those transgender men, who think about giving birth after they have already started gender affirming hormone therapy.
Medical investigation took place in Tel Aviv, Israel and continued for twelve month, during which about 52 transgender men were monitored. The age of the test subjects ranged between 17 and 40 years. After doctors received the complete results of the test, they were astonished to discover that the level of the Anti-Mullerian Hormone diminished after 12 months, but still remained within the normal range for fertility. This surprising fact means that transgender men can conceive even in spite of receiving testosterone treatment for about a year. The thing is that the level of the Anti-Mullerian Hormone makes it possible to determine the so-called “ovarian reserve”providing doctors with the necessary information on the remaining egg supply. The chief investigator of the research, YonaGreenman, commented: “Our revolutionary studyreveals for the first time that after 12 months of testosterone injections, ovary function is preserved to a degree that may allow reproduction. It’s hard to believe, but it is an incredible fact.” Israeli researchers presented their conclusions at the Endocrine Society, the world’s premier event in endocrine science and medicine, which was held from 23 to 26 March in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
